Conversations about alcohol and other drug use

Conversations about alcohol and other drug use can be difficult for health professionals to initiate, particularly with older patients.

Shame and embarrassment tend to be the barriers preventing older Australians from talking about their drinking habits or alcohol consumption.

In partnership with local addiction specialists, general practitioners and Sushi Productions, WAPHA developed a series of short online video resources to assist GPs in starting these conversations.

The four videos feature case scenarios for GPs, a presentation by Dr Norman Swan on how and why to talk to older patients and a panel interview with local experts which explores safe consumption levels, referral options, health implications, residential aged care and pharmacotherapies.
